An Olympic bronze has been awarded to the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust for its ongoing initiatives to keep its staff healthy.
The Trust organises an annual 5-a-side tournament during Mens Health Week to promote health awareness amongst men, a netball tournament for women, and zumba classes for staff.
The efforts have won a bronze accreditation from the NHS (2012) Challenge which aims to create a health and wellbeing legacy for the NHS from the London 2012 Olympics. Chief executive Owen Williams – who played in the staff 5-a-side tournament - will collect the award in London next month from the Chief Executive of the NHS Sir David Nicholson. (July 9)
Linda Cordingley, who heads up the Workforce Wellbeing projects at the Trust, said: “We try to help our staff to be healthy and stay healthy and to get this bronze award is brilliant and a reflection of the work which is ongoing. We now have our sights on more projects and a gold next time!”
The players in the football tournaments are offered blood pressure testing, and given information and advice regarding weight management, smoking and safe drinking. Each player receives a health information pack and is offered a personal appointment with occupational health adviser as a follow-up to the event. Holistic massage sessions are also provided.
