Surgery surveys for patients

Patients who come into hospital for some types of surgery will be asked to take part in a survey that aims to help us improve our services still further.

Since April this year we have been taking part in the national Department of Health PROMs survey – Patient Related Outcome Measures.

Every hospital in the country is being asked to carry out the surveys to find out what their patients think about the care they receive and to help trusts improve their services. Patients who have had surgery in four categories – hips replacements, knee replacements, groin hernias and varicose veins – are taking part with the aim of rolling it out across all specialties.

A patient is given the survey on the day of surgery and is then is contacted three months (for hernias and varicose veins) or six months later (for hip and knee replacements) asking them to compare how they felt pre-surgery and how they felt afterwards. The aim is to use the feedback to improve services for patients still further.
