Service Summary

This service provides wheelchairs to clients who have a long term need (usually 3 months plus) for a wheelchair.

Clients should be registered to GPs within the boundaries of the Calderdale and Kirklees Primary Care Trusts (PCT’s).

The service is provided from bases at The Lodge, Park Valley Mill, Lockwood for those registered to a GP in Kirklees and the Community Care Services, Salterhebble for those registered to a GP in Calderdale.

There are currently 8,511 clients who have equipment from the service, ranging from standard ‘push type’ to custom made wheelchairs and made to measure seating systems.

Our services provide mobility equipment to anyone over the age of 30 months until such time as they no longer need help, and as long as a GP, physiotherapist or occupational therapist supports the referral.

Issue is based on clinical need and we may need to assess clients before we can decide on an appropriate wheelchair.

The Voucher Scheme

The Voucher Scheme was set up to allow wheelchair users to have more choice in relation to the type of manual wheelchair they use.

There are two options, the partnership or the independent. More information on these choices can be found in our leaflet “The Wheelchair Voucher Scheme - The Choice is Yours”.

For your copy call 01422 306701 if you live in Calderdale or 01484 667809 if you live in Kirklees.

Short-term loan wheelchairs

People who need a wheelchair for a short period i.e. after an accident or being discharged from hospital, can be offered a short-term loan wheelchair subject to availability.

The Wheelchair Service does not provide a wheelchair if it is only required for day trips, outings etc. although you may be able to borrow one from the services listed when clicking on the following link
