Main page contentThe Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust wants to save more lives… with your help.
We are steadily increasing the number of organ donations yet recognise that much, much more could be done if there were more donors.
And it is also worth remembering it is not is not just organ donation. Tissue donation can also save and improve lives.

- Dr Peter Hall
Dr Peter Hall is the clinical lead for organ and tissue donation at the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust and Jayne Greenhalgh is our specialist nurse.
Here’s what they have to say about tissue and organ donation.
Dr Peter Hall said “We have been trying especially hard over the last year to make sure everyone who can is given the chance to help someone live after their death. We have made great strides in this direction.
“However, if I could magically change one thing to help, it would be to make sure everyone took a few minutes to let their family know their wishes regarding organ donation. This is even more important than registering as a donor, since we still have to approach your family.
“We know that almost 90% of people say they would donate, but approaching a family in the midst of a tragedy is tremendously difficult for them and 40% of families feel unable to allow donation to occur.
“So, please, take a moment to let your family know that you are willing to give the gift of life.”

- Jayne Greenhalgh
Organ donation specialist nurse Jayne Greenhalgh trained in Leeds, and once qualified, worked for a year on a general surgery ward at Seacroft Hospital.
In 1994 she moved to the Intensive Care at St James's Hospital, Leeds, a unit which specialised in liver transplantation. She has worked there for 16 years, the last six years as a sister. Her special interest has always been organ donation and transplantation.
Jayne said “I have worked as a specialist nurse for organ donation for Huddersfield and Calderdale NHS Foundation trust since the summer of 2011 and along with Peter Hall the clinical lead for organ donation we have formed a committee to look at ways to promote organ and tissue donation through the trust.
“Although we recognise that it may not be the wish of every family our aim is that the option of donation becomes part of all end of life care discussions, and we have made great progress in doing this in the critical care areas over the last few months.
“It is however, often difficult for families to make that decision when they did not know their loved ones wishes and with this in mind I too would urge everyone to have these discussions with their loved ones now and let them know your wishes."
Organ donation at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust
- The Trust now has an established organ donation committee which, together with the clinical lead for organ donation, Dr Peter Hall, and specialist nurse in organ donation, Jayne Greenhalgh aim to refer for donation ALL appropriate cases.
- We have already seen improvements in our referral and donation rates. The latest figures show the Trust has the largest number of donors in Yorkshire of any district general hospital.
- Recent changes in criteria for donation mean that almost everyone can be given the opportunity to donate
