He cycled through the snow for his patients. James is our latest Star!

Physiotherapist for Intermediate Care, James Smith, main image, is our January Star Award winner – after cycling 10 miles, often uphill, to get to work in the snow…on a racing bike.

Chief Executive, Owen Williams, right top, said: “When the snow came you found a way - miraculously - of getting yourself in. And on top of that picking up MDT's and falls assessments too, which is why Dave nominated you. Honestly, well done. Coming in on a bike is pretty special going, given that weather.”

James’s nominator, physiotherapist, Dave Nuttall, bottom, said “We literally couldn't have done it that day without you. I got stuck in traffic and I live quite near you, and it took me five hours to try and get into work and you managed to only be 20 minutes late on a bike...with a 10 mile journey, which is just ridiculous! It's not even a mountain bike, it's a racing bike with the tiniest thin wheels. I don't know how you got in.”

Therapy Services Manager, Claire Folan, added. “I’m so impressed that you managed to do that and then come in and run the unit when everyone else was stuck in their cars. You definitely put the patient first, thank you.”

Dave’s nomination also included: “James braved the treacherous conditions and the notoriously hilly journey. He worked diligently to complete all essential aspects of care and to cover his colleagues planned work from the previous day. He completed the full shift and did not ask to leave early, even as the conditions worsened.”
