Colorectal Surgery

The enhanced recovery programme is different to traditional care and aims to get you back to full health as soon possible by you playing an active part in your recovery after bowel surgery.

With the help of the multidisciplinary team, including doctors and nurses, and taking an active role in your recovery by following these steps it should make your recovery easier and quicker:

  • Good advice and information prior to your operation
  • Carbohydrate drinks (sugary) before your operation if appropriate. (Some people with diabetes are unable to have the drinks)
  • Effective pain relief
  • Starting drinking and eating at an early stage
  • Getting out of bed and walking regularly after your operation
