Surgical SDEC (DM Version)
Welcome to the Surgical SDEC Unit at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary
We’re here to provide safe, fast, and effective care for patients who need urgent surgical attention without the need for an overnight hospital stay.
What is Surgical SDEC?

SDEC stands for Same Day Emergency Care. It means you can have tests, treatment, and a specialist review on the same day, instead of being admitted to hospital.
This approach is part of the NHS Long Term Plan and helps us give you the right care quickly and safely.
Where is the Unit and When Are We Open?
Location: Block 1, Lower Ground Floor, Huddersfield Royal Infirmary
Opening Hours:
- Monday–Saturday: 7:00am – 10:30pm (new referrals until 6:00pm)
- Sunday: 7:00am – 7:30pm (new referrals until 3:00pm)
We see patients referred by GPs and Emergency Departments, as well as those returning for follow-up care.
Why is SDEC good for patients?
Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) helps you get the right care quickly. You’ll receive a faster assessment and diagnosis, a senior surgical review, and where possible nearly treatment without needing to stay in hospital.
Who will look after me?

You’ll be cared for by a dedicated team led by consultant surgeons, supported by doctors, nurses, advanced nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and clinical support workers all working together to make sure you get the best care.
What Happens When You Arrive?
- Check-in at reception and take a seat in the waiting area
- We’ll do some initial checks (pulse, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen levels)

Sometimes scans happen the next day if so, we’ll arrange this for you. - Once results are back, a senior doctor will explain your diagnosis and treatment plan

- Blood test results can take up to 2 hours
- Please don’t eat or drink until you check with staff
