A real #TeamCHFT effort has seen our Trust top the leaderboard of 21 NHS Trusts in the UK for the Duration UTI Research trial.
CHFT has already recruited 45 patients into the study, which means we have also achieved our recruitment target.
The study is being led by Principal Investigator (PI), Dr Rangaprasad Karadi, and Research Healthcare Professional, Zuleikha Mulla.
Dr Karadi said: “Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infections, especially in females.
“Currently, there is lack of evidence around the optimum duration of antibiotics to treat kidney infection in female patients, and a longer duration of treatment can often lead to drug-related side effects or antibiotic resistance.
“The Duration UTI trial aims to identify the shortest course of antibiotics required to effectively treat urinary tract infections and also help the NHS be more cost efficient by saving money on prescriptions and re-attendances to A&E. CHFT has played an important role in this and our research contribution will help to provide the vital information required to shape future medical practice in this field.”
In December 2023, CHFT was the first hospital nationally to open to recruitment after Consultant, Dr Sue Crossland, collaborated with the Brighton and Sussex clinical trials unit to set up the study.
Dr Karadi added: “The multidisciplinary team effort has been instrumental in achieving this milestone and demonstrates excellent collaboration involving clinicians in Acute Medicine, Emergency Department, our Microbiology Team, the dedicated Research Team and more importantly, the willingness of our patient population to contribute to research.”
