Our Research Team are celebrating having recruited the first participant in the UK into a new commercial gastroenterology study evaluating a novel treatment for adults with moderate to severe active ulcerative colitis (UC).

UC is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the colon and rectum, causing symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss, with no current cure. The study offers patients who have not responded adequately to standard treatments access to a therapy designed to inhibit the key drivers of chronic inflammation.

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trusts's Research and Development Lead, Tracy Wood, said “This is a great achievement for our teams and highlights our commitment to bringing advanced research opportunities to patients locally, improving access to potential new treatments and helping to advance future standards of care for people living with UC. Well done to everyone involved”

Principal Investigator, Dr Mohamed Yousif, pictured left, said: “It is fantastic to be involved in this study and to be able to offer our patients the opportunity to participate in research into new treatments for ulcerative colitis. I am extremely proud of the team for all their hard work on achieving this UK first and giving our patients the access to this treatment.”

This achievement has been made possible through the close collaboration between our Gastroenterology and Research Teams.

Tracy added: “We’re proud to work as part of our regional Commercial Research Delivery Centre (CRDC). We have a shared commitment to putting patient care at the heart of everything we do. This collaboration highlights the importance of working together across our clinical and research teams to bring new and innovative research opportunities to our patients.”
