Following a huge joint effort, our trauma and orthopaedic teams have started to offer Hip Arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) at CHFT, with our first patients doing well after their procedures.
Hip Arthroscopic surgery is targeted at our younger patients who live with different hip conditions that cannot be resolved by physiotherapy and who are still too young to have a hip replacement.
These conditions can be developmental conditions like hip impingement or dysplasia, or traumatic like hamstring tendons and hip labral tears.
The introduction of Hip Arthroscopy was led by Sam Mahmoud, pictured main image, second right, who said: “This surgery requires specialist training and is considered quite advanced. It was previously only offered at Leeds, and our patients had to go through a waiting list of two years to have it there.
“Offering this procedure at CHFT brings us in line with the 10 Year Health Plan for England and will help end postcode health discrepancies.
“As soon as I started at here CHFT I believed we could help our patients by offering it to our patients.
“It wouldn't have happened without the immense support of my manager, Jane Peacock, who worked closely with the regional ICB. I must also shout-out my amazing theatre team, who kept supporting the procedure and showed great enthusiasm to get this of the ground.
“Offering this at CHFT is a great achievement and an amazing example of teamwork between management, surgeons and theatre teams.”
