Our surgical team grab another top award

Published on:

Our Department of General Surgery have won a Patient Safety Award for their work on redesigning rotas to deliver emergency care, making sure the department meets all national guidelines for acute surgical patients.

Since the implementation of the new rota, there have been several significant improvements in the patient journey and clinical outcomes, such that the results in Huddersfield are now some of the best in the country.

The judges at the Patient Safety Awards said “This was an example of shared medical leadership and teamwork at its best, with demonstrable improvements in a range of safety outcomes.”

General Manager Jason Bushby said "To see surgeons working collaboratively like this is a real achievement. They have worked together to change the way they deliver care, put the patient first and done the must dos. It's a brilliant approach and our patients and their families are feeling the benefits."

The Patient Safety Award is the culmination of a year of successful recognition for the work done within the surgical department at CHFT. The department won the inaugural National Emergency Laparotomy Audit prize in 2016 and was shortlisted earlier this year for the BMJ Surgical Team of the Year.
