Important information about building work to create a new Cardiology Department at CRH

From Monday, 25th May, the Cardiology Department at Calderdale Royal Hospital will be getting ready for building work to start on our new purpose-built cardiology day case unit and two new Catheter labs.

This work will bring our catheter labs, day case unit and Cardiology Department all in the same area of the hospital on the ground floor, improving quality of care and experience for our patients.

The Cardiology Department is open and running as usual during the work.

Building work will be carried out Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 5pm. There is likely to be noise within the department from this work.

Your privacy and experience are important to us and our team are here to support you. If there is anything we can do to help while this work is happening, please speak to one of the team.

We expect the work to take around nine months.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

From mid-July, you will need to use a different entrance to the department.

This will be via the Dermatology Department (located past the Outpatient Pharmacy). You can use the map below to help, and there will also be signs up in the hospital to help you.

Frequently asked questions

How will this work make the Cardiology service better for patients?

Two new cath labs at CRH will create a more efficient service and improve the overall patient experience. The labs will help streamline patient flow, reduce pressure on inpatient beds, and support faster access to procedures and investigations, enabling the cardiology team to deliver care more effectively.

Located alongside the labs, the new day case unit at CRH will allow patients undergoing planned treatments and investigations to recover in a dedicated area close to the catheter labs until they are ready for discharge. This means patients can avoid recovering on busy wards, providing a calmer and more appropriate environment.

What is a Catheter Lab?

A catheter lab is an examination room with diagnostic imaging equipment used to diagnose and treat specific cardiac conditions. A catheter lab is where tests and procedures including angiograms, percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) and implantation of pacemakers, internal cardiac defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices are carried out. A catheter lab is staffed with a multidisciplinary team including a cardiologist, nurses, a radiographer, and a physiologist.

At the moment, there is one catheter lab in the Radiology Department, and a pacing suite based on the Coronary Care Unit (CCU).
