Pathology
The Pathology Directorate provides comprehensive laboratory services in support of diagnosis, monitoring and treatment for patients within the Trust’s hospitals and clinics, and for family practitioners within the local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).
The Directorate is made up of three major disciplines:
- Cellular Pathology (Histopathology, Non-Gynae Cytology, Andrology and Mortuary)
- Microbiology/Infection Control
- Blood Sciences (Haematology, Clinical Biochemistry, Immunology and Blood Transfusion)
All of these provide analytical, diagnostic and advisory services to their users. Analysis of specimens takes place within laboratories at Calderdale Royal Hospital and at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, which are managed as a single pathology service. Cellular Pathology and Microbiology are located at Calderdale Royal Hospital. Blood Sciences are located on both sites. The Directorate also provides an in-patient and out-patient phlebotomy (blood sample-taking) service at both of the Trust’s hospitals, and at certain clinics and surgeries within the community. CHFT Microbiology Service move to the Centre for Laboratory Medicine, Leeds
In Autumn 2026, our Microbiology service at CHFT will move to the Centre for Laboratory Medicine (CfLM) at St James’s Hospital, Leeds. The laboratory which opened in 2023, provides a bespoke environment supported by the latest technologies, state-of-the art equipment and greater integration of automated processes.
Moving microbiology services into the CfLM, will enable more consistent, clinically appropriate turnaround times, ensuring the right test is available at the right time for patients across the region.
Once the move is complete all CHFT Microbiology testing will be delivered by the CfLM. There will be no Microbiology laboratory service at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital.
The microbiology move forms part of the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT) pathology partnership and strategy. The pathology partnership centralises some services to fewer sites where previously they were hosted in all three trusts across West Yorkshire – Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (LTHT), Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust (MYTT) and CHFT. Consolidating testing to fewer sites allows for a more consistent and streamlined service, providing the same high-quality service to patients across the region, regardless of where they live.
Colleagues from neighbouring MYTT moved to the CfLM in September last year. CHFT colleagues will move this Autumn following an upgrade to the regional Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). A shared LIMS will enable trusts across WYAAT to request, view and share patient test results with each other, providing clinical users with a more complete patient history. Being able to see test results taken across the region allows our consultants, nurses, and other clinicians to diagnose and treat patients sooner, removing the unnecessary admin associated with requesting tests from other hospitals.
Information for patients
Our patients do not need to do anything. We expect that over time, tests and clinical diagnosis will be quicker.
Information for GP practices
We will update our website with information for GP practices ahead of the move.
