Clinical Lead Dietitian, Lisa Green, has been cited in a research article for Frontiers in Nutrition after she and some of the team took part in a 13-month study testing out a new plant-based enteral feed (nutrition which is given through a feeding tube direct into a patient’s stomach or small intestine).
Since publication, the new product is already being widely used with our community patients and is now available for patients in hospital.
Lisa (pictured, left) was the Principle Investigator, and staff who worked with her were Assistant Practitioner Rachel Raif (pictured, right) , Assistant Practitioner Sheryl Sutcliffe (pictured, centre) and former CHFT Dietitian Becky Martin, who has since moved to South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
Lisa said: “The results of the study showed improved gastrointestinal tolerance in patients using the plant-based feed. The feed is very high in calories and protein and contains fibre, so very different to what was currently available on prescription for patients.
“The research has helped to bring this product to market with Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances (ACBS) approval. It has recently been available to order for patients, and we are seeing great results.
“Because it is plant-based, it is an important step for those patients who are vegetarian and vegan as there were very limited options before.
“This was a true team effort. I am very proud of the team and our involvement. Seeing the product available is the icing on the cake!”
