HRI Radiographer Lisa Francis is one of 8,000 people in the UK waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. This Organ Donation Week she asked us to share her story to encourage as many people as possible to register their decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register, and to let their families know of their decision.
Lisa said: “If I wasn’t on dialysis, I would have died three years ago – it’s as simple as that. This past year has been extremely difficult, with some very serious health issues, and I’m currently having sessions with a Renal Psychologist. Having a clinical background means I understand the physical mechanics of my illness, though having expert psychological support is so important for my mental wellbeing.”
With her medical background Lisa, who has lived with kidney disease since birth, counts herself lucky in being able to carry out her twice weekly 4-hour haemodialysis at home to remove toxins and excess fluid. Most patients have to travel to centres for their dialysis.
“I have had the most unbelievable support from my line manager, Advanced Practitioner, Louise McPhail and my Head of Service, Mark Williams. Louise has even taken the time to take me to urgent hospital appointments, really showing me One Culture of Care.
“I can’t thank them both enough. Their support has made my illness so much easier to deal with.
“To be honest my job gives me a real perspective and focus on my own illness, but a transplant would be the icing on the cake.
“A small action can make a huge difference for patients waiting for transplants, so please take a few minutes to look at your options on the NHS Organ Donor Register – and thank you! Please let your family know of your decisions too."
