“Smoking at time of birth is half what it used to be"

Lucy and Naomi on No Smoking Day raising awareness in Maternity Services

It’s been three years since the maternity in-house stop smoking service was introduced at CHFT. Led by Specialist Health Advisers, Lucy Pendlebury and Naomi Hegney, the Smokefree Pregnancy Service has achieved some fantastic results which are having a big impact on the health of mum and baby.

Their results include:

  • CHFT Smokefree Pregnancy Pathway being offered to 100% of women who smoke at booking and those who have quit since conception.
  • CO (carbon monoxide) testing at booking has increased from 55% to 92.8%
  • CO testing at 36 weeks has increased from 50% to 98.21%
  • Smoking At Time Of Delivery has reduced from 10.62% to 5.47%
  • Compliant with Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle Element 1

Lucy and Naomi (pictured) work within the Maternity Health Advisor Team. The team won the 2023 CHuFT Award for Putting People First, with Lucy and Naomi being cited as a ‘huge driving force behind the achievements”.

Lead Midwife for Public Health, Kate Heighway, said: “Smoking at time of birth is half what it used to be, which means a lot less mothers are smoking in pregnancy and their babies are well grown and healthier when they are born.”
