Lost Hearing aids
The hearing aids you are given are on loan to you from the NHS, therefore if your hearing aid is lost or damaged due to negligence there is a charge to replace them.
The charge of lost aids is a standard flat rate of £100 per hearing aid. There are some exemptions in which you may not have to pay.

What is negligence?
- Damage caused to your hearing aids by household appliances such as washing machines.
- Exposure to too much moisture / water – e.g. the shower.
- Poor storage of your hearing aids resulting in any physical damage e.g. teeth marks
- Hearing aids sent via post that are inadequately wrapped to avoid damage.
Exemptions
To be eligible for the wavered costs of lost or damaged NHS aids, you must meet one of the criteria below:
- Be under 18 years of age
- Have a Ministry of Defence prescription exemption certificate
- Receive Income support or income-related employment and support allowance
- Receive Income-based jobseeker’s allowance
- Have a Tax credit exemption certificate
- Hospital patients or those in a care home
- Patients not capable of caring for themselves
- Victims of crime of house theft or mugging where the aid is stolen or damaged
- Patients who are registered sight impaired / severely sight impaired
- Receive Pension credit guarantee credit, paid on its own, or Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit with Savings Credit)
- Receive Universal Credit and meets the criteria - but only if earnings in your last assessment period were £435 or less, or £935 or less if you get an element for a child or have limited capability for work
Please note you’re not automatically exempt if you are named on an award for:
- Contribution-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, paid on its own
- Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance, paid on its own
- Pension Credit (Savings Credit), paid on its own
- Any benefit paid on its own and not listed above (such as State Pension, Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment or Incapacity Benefit)
How to pay for a replacement hearing aid
There are two ways in which you can pay for your replacement hearing aid.
Should you wish to pay for your hearing aid in person you can make this payment at the General Office located at either Calderdale Royal Hospital or Huddersfield Royal infirmary. Once paid, the general office will provide you with a receipt which you must bring to your appointment.
You can also pay online using the link below. After payment a receipt will be emailed to you, please show this to the audiologist when receiving your replacement.
Getting your replacement hearing aid
Please contact the department on 01484 343500 or email us at repairs.audiology@cht.nhs.uk to arrange an appointment to collect your replacement hearing aid / hearing aids.
Please let us know which hearing aid needs replacing. If you need a replacement mould, we will take the next steps to get this ordered and contact you as soon as it is returned.
