Capsule Sponge

What is Barrett's Oesophagus?

Barrett’s oesophagus is a condition in which the normal cells lining the food pipe (oesophagus) have become replaced with abnormal cells. These abnormal cells are not cancer cells, but in a small number of people these cells may develop into oesophageal cancer over time. For this reason, surveillance investigations are performed to monitor for cell changes. At this trust we offer the “capsule sponge” to those who are deemed suitable. It is a safe and easily tolerated test that is an alternative to endoscopy, and has been introduced in a number of areas in the NHS.

What is a capsule sponge test?

A capsule sponge test is a procedure to collect cells from the oesophagus to assess for the presence of abnormal cells found in conditions such as Barrett’s oesophagus, and to help in decision-making regarding further investigations or treatment. It involves swallowing a vitamin-pill sized capsule, used to collect cells lining the oesophagus for laboratory analysis. Your appointment may last up to 30 minutes, although the procedure itself only takes about 10 minutes, and you will be able to return home and carry out normal activities after your appointment.

Can I have this test?

At CHFT this test is currently offered to patients with a known diagnosis of Barrett's oesphagus. Around the time you are due your Barrett's surveillance, the capsule sponge team may approach you by means of a letter if they feel the test might be suitable for you. In the following weeks the team will contact you by telephone to discuss the test, answer questions you may have, confirm your suitablity and preference for your surveillance. This telephone assessment is important before booking your appointment as there are a very small number of people for whom the test is not suitable. Please note calls from the hospital will often present as "No caller ID" or "Private Number".
