In November 2019 we launched our Macmillan Health Walk in partnership with Kirklees Council and the Ramblers Association. Three of our wonderful Macmillan volunteers, Shaz, Trish and Margaret, trained as walk leaders with Kirklees Council and ran monthly walks around Greenhead Park.
Unfortunately due to the pandemic, we moved the walking group to an online group in summer 2020 and will continue with this virtual support group until it is safe to go back to face to face walks.
Physical activity is extremely important for people affected by cancer, and walking is an ideal gentle activity to raise the heart rate and get some fresh air. The social part of the group is also extremely important, with the chance for attendees to meet other people in a similar situation and chat to our Macmillan volunteers and staff for support too.
The virtual Macmillan Walking Group takes place online on the first Thursday of the month, 2pm til 3pm, on Microsoft Teams. The group includes time to chat and watch a couple of walking videos - local or from around the world - and an occasional quiz too.
Everyone is very welcome – please contact the Macmillan Information and Support Team for an invite – firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 01484 343614 or 01422 222709. The team can also help you get set up with the technology for Microsoft Teams and do a test call with you before the support group.
