What is pelvic floor dysfunction?

This is where you may have difficulty activating or coordinating your pelvic floor muscles, resulting in bladder, bowel and vaginal symptoms.

How do you treat pelvic floor dysfunction?

You will be given advice and pelvic floor muscle exercises under the care of a specialist physiotherapist.

What will happen at my first appointment?

We will discuss your symptoms, bladder, bowel and relevant medical history. You will receive advice and explanations for the symptoms you are experiencing.

You will be offered a vaginal examination to assess the strength and function of your pelvic floor muscles.

We will discuss the treatment options relevant for you, and make a treatment plan together.

If I have my period, should I still come to my appointment?

You can still come to your appointment to receive advice and exercises.

You can have a vaginal examination whilst on your period, it is a personal choice to the individual.

Can I request a translator for my appointment?

Yes, please add your preferred language to your referral form, or ask the health professional completing your referral to include this.

Can I bring my baby to the appointment?

Babies are welcome in the physiotherapy department. All departments are accessible with a pram.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, you can bring a relative or friend if you would like to. Please be aware that space is limited, only one additional person may attend.

Can I refer myself to the service if it is over 12-months since I had my baby?

No, please speak to your GP or midwife who can refer you to the correct service.
