1. About Us
The Calderdale Neuropsychology Outpatient Service supports adults (18+) living in Calderdale who are experiencing changes in their thinking, memory, or other cognitive skills. These changes may be linked to a diagnosed neurological condition, or there may be a concern that they could have an underlying medical or neurological cause.
We help people understand what is happening with their thinking and how it affects everyday life, safety, independence, and wellbeing. Our role is to provide clear, practical guidance that supports your care. We work closely with other health professionals to make sure your assessment and recommendations fit smoothly into your wider treatment and rehabilitation.
What we offer
We are an assessment‑led service. This means we focus on understanding your thinking skills and providing clear guidance based on what we find. We do not offer psychological therapy for mood or emotional difficulties. Instead, our work focuses on:
- Specialist neuropsychological assessment
- Helping clarify diagnoses.
- Clear explanations of cognitive strengths and difficulties
- Practical recommendations to support daily life
- Consultation and advice to MDT colleagues
2. Meet the Team
- Dr James Hall - Principal Clinical Psychologist in Neuropsychology
- Dr Levi Calvo-Dobbs - Senior Clinical Psychologist in Neuropsychology
- Kirsty Sharp - Secretary
3. What can you expect at your appointment?
Your first appointment is usually a conversation lasting 1–2 hours. During this time, we explore:
- Your thinking skills
- Any changes you’ve noticed and how they affect your life
- Your symptoms and medical history
- Your day‑to‑day experiences
- Your mood and emotional wellbeing
- Any questions or concerns you may have
What happens after the first appointment
After your first appointment, we’ll work with you to decide the best next steps. This may be continuing with neuropsychology or being supported by another service.
If neuropsychology is appropriate, most people are offered a cognitive assessment. These sessions involve paper‑and‑pencil or computer‑based tasks that help us understand:
- What has changed
- How these changes affect everyday life
- Which areas are strengths and which are more difficult
Sessions usually last 1-2 hours and may take place over several appointments.
These tasks are not exams. There is no passing or failing, they simply help us understand how your brain is working.
Once your assessment is complete, you (and your family if you wish) will be invited to a feedback appointment. We will:
- Explain the findings
- Discuss what they mean for you
- Share practical recommendations
- Advise on next steps
- Signpost you to other services if needed
4. Where will the service be offered?
Appointments take place at Calderdale Royal Hospital. In some circumstances, we can offer secure remote video appointments, although face‑to‑face assessment is preferred. We will discuss options with you when arranging your first appointment.
5. How can you be referred to the service?
If you feel you may benefit from this service, please speak with a member of your treating team - for example your consultant, clinical nurse specialist or therapist. They can provide more information and make a referral if appropriate. Your treating team may also recommend referral.
6. Contact Us
Our secretary can be contacted on 01484 346030. Please leave a message if you reach the voicemail and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
